Memories and Photos From Axel Stein

When John was the Director of the Visual Arts Program at the Americas Society in NY, and I was the Director of the Arts program of Fundación Eugenio Mendoza (Sala Mendoza, Caracas) he came to Venezuela to help me co-curate an exhibition of three Venezuelan artists at the Society Gallery on Park Avenue. One of the artists Carlos Zerpa and his wife Maria Eugenia, my wife Noni and I took him to Macuto to visit the Castillete (small castle) of Armando Reverón, an outsider artist that had retired there in the early 1920´s. After visiting the place we went to have lunch at Las Quince Letras, a restaurant built on the beach where Reverón used to paint his marinas. That is where these pictures were taken. Coincidentally, I last met John while visiting the Armando Reverón exhibition at MoMA, in the spring of 2007.He was a true gentleman. We will all miss him.
