Memories and Photos From David Humphries

John always swept me off my feet with his bear hugs & infectious enthusiasm; we were best buddies for more than thirty years. Sharing numerous mutual interests and enthusiasms we remained in touch through out the seventies and eighties in NYC. Bicycling across the Brooklyn Bridge to explore all the galleries on Saturdays, openings, concerts, parties and all that sensational hospitality of the Stringer household, it was like I was one of the family.
John created an amazing life in WA. He blossomed like a wonderful wild flower, his passion for art, people, and the environment flourished, his love, happiness, clear-sited intellect and generosity inspired great friendships.
The Kerry Stokes Collection was the vehicle to express all his experience and genius. He had such high regard for Kerry and loved their collaboration in building the collection, it was his dream come true job.
Much has and will be said about his fabulous career and all of it is amazing. It was so integrated into his life and networks, he became legendary, but there is also the John who loved exploring, travelling and discovering.
The ever-faithful pooch Adara (the dog star) was always included in the action wherever possible
Adara has her mat under the Dubfey at the office and dutifully attended every day. Quietly nose nudging visitors, scanning them with her spooky dingo eyes. I have been on many road trips into the outback with John and Adara and she was a regular houseguest at Rosebery when John came to Sydney. I was always impressed with the care and respect that John applied to her. They loved each other. It was typical of him to treat all beings as equal.
John visited Sydney on a regular basis and it was always something to look forward to. Lots of galleries, Perth and art world news and events. We had many dinners and festivities at my studio, when John was in town friends gathered! He certainly was ‘the intoxicated celebrator of life itself. John had a wonderful ability to make everyone he met feel included and important! ‘

My love and deepest sympathies go out to my dear friends June, Simon, Phoebe and Cloe, and all his family who, along with all of us who loved him, will miss him more than he could ever know.

And to John thank you for the part of your life that became part of mine, my sorrow is motivated by the loss of future time with you .
But it was a good run buddy !
You are surely being guided through the galaxy with all this show of collective love.
Guess that’s what the stars are made of!

Hasta la vista ! Jumping Jack Flash !

As ever
David Humphries
